Jaffna Troops Offer Help for Low Income Families

Taking peninsula’s social and economic issues into account, Jaffna Security Forces Headquarters is in the process of supporting low income groups and students in need of financial assistance to continue their studies.

The multifaceted projects, organized on the instructions given by Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya to the Security Forces, Jaffna, commanded by Major General M. Hathurusinghe, started last week during a simple ceremony at Jaffna Civil Affairs and Public Relations Office.
         
Introducing new methods for income generation, Army troops distributed poultry among low income groups in the area.  Ten families symbolically received those chickens on the occasion. The project is to be extended to as many as 8,000 low income group families within a few weeks as the troops are preparing to give away 12 hens and two fowls to each family free. It is believed the project would help promote livelihood and nutrition of more than some 20,000 people in different areas once the project starts blossoming.          

 In addition, ten students from Jaffna town based schools received scholarships from the Sri Lanka Army during the same simple ceremony, held at Civil Affairs and Public Relations Office in Jaffna.

Nine students from Urumpirai Hindu College and a student from St. Anthony’s College, Jaffna, all of them from needy families received their Savings Bank books from Major General M. Hathurusinghe, Commander, Jaffna Security Forces on the occasion after the project was symbolically launched. Each student under this scheme was to receive Rs.1000/= every month under this programme, enabling them to continue their high studies.

Major General Hathurusinghe speaking to the parents present on the occasion highlighted the importance of giving education to their children. Afterwards, he gave away valuable school accessories and educational items among twenty students who showed excellence in studies.

Jaffna District Secretary Mrs. Imelda Sugumar, Jaffna Mayor Mrs. Y. Pathugunaraja, General Officer Commanding 51 Division Major General Walgama and several senior government officials were present at the occasion.
