Appreciative of his more than three-decade long service and commitment to the country, Jaffna’s reputed St. Patrick’s College on Thursday (13), felicitated her illustrious alumnus, Major General H. Luxman David, one of the most senior officers of the Army during a grand ceremony at the College premises.
St. Patrick’s College’s Rector Rev. Fr. M. Jero Selvanayagam, the Chief Organizer of the felicitation ceremony cordially welcomed the day’s protagonist, together with senior members of the tutorial staff and prefects at the entrance to the College.
A salute, presented by Patrician Cadets honoured their illustrious old student afterwards as he walked towards the main auditorium where the ceremony got underway.
Rev. Fr. Selvanayagam in his tribute commended the achievements of their past pupil who has reached greater heights in life in the field of military career, education and social services and told the gathering that this recognition from his own alma mater is a fitting tribute that an alumnus could rarely receive in one’s life.
Major General David, accepting the honours recalled his days at the College, paying the highest reverence to his pedagogues and various trainers and coaches.
A colourful entertainment, presented by students, added variety to the occasion where several speakers, including Major General Udaya Perera, Commander, Security Force Headquarters - Jaffna (SFHQ-J), praised Major General David for his attainments in the military career, through which he served the country and brought laurels to his College in Jaffna.
Towards the end of the event, Rector Rev. Fr. Selvanayagam, on behalf of the College, presented a symbolic appreciative gesture to Major General David, the Chief Guest of the day.
Founded in 1850, Jaffna’s St. Patrick’s College, fostering an atmosphere of intellectual vigour and moral rectitude, as an institute primarily, meant for Catholics, has become one of the most reputed colleges in the peninsula, providing citizens with high moral grounds, backed by qualitative knowledge that was imparted to her students by dedicated teachers for generations.
Meanwhile, Major General David following his own initiative on Friday (14) launched a two-day workshop for Jaffna-based students on ‘Personality Development & Public Relations Programme’ in order to help students around his native place in Jaffna.
The workshop at Jaffna Civil-Military Relations Office is to be supported by a panel of guest lecturers, arriving from Colombo and elsewhere with the coordination, done by Major General David himself.
