A spate of social service assignments, including offer of free meals to hospitals and charity organizations, conduct of cleaning and clearing programmes in various temples, churches and mosques and public places, donation of essentials, school accessories, books, sports items, pairs of spectacles, repainting and renovation work and suchlike dominated the elaborate community-oriented projects that were launched by the Security Force Headquarters-Jaffna (SFHQ-J) on Thursday (19) to coincide with its 18th anniversary since its founding in Jaffna.
Hundreds of troops serving 51, 52 and 55 Divisions on the directions of Major General Udaya Perera, Commander, SFHQ J offered lunch treats and snacks to 45 minors at Achchuveli Probation School, 62 children at AthbuCholai, 17 pre school kids at 'Assembly of God' at Kondavil, the poor around Nallur Kovil, 32 children at ' Mallar Mattakar' pre-school at Araly, 102 adults at St Joseph's Home for Elders at Pasoor, 50 inmates at Sandilipay Elders' Welfare Home, 20 patients at the mental ward at Thelippalai hospital, 70 general patients at Thelippalai Hospital, 36 adults at Putur Adults' Home, inmates at Kaithady 'Handicap' Blind School, 250 school students at Kadaikadu School, inmates at Paramananda Adults' Home at Palay, Thumpalai Children's Home, Patients at Palay Hospital, 25 pre school kids at Kovilwayal and the patients at Ampan Hospital around noon on Thursday (19) with the participation of respective General Officers Commanding, Brigade Commanders, Unit Commanders and Commanding Officers, attached to 511 Brigade, 11 Sri Lanka Light Infantry, 15, 9, 19, 10 & 20 Sri Lanka National Guard, 512 Brigade, 6 Sri Lanka Signal Corps, 17 Gemunu Watch, 23 Gajaba Regiment, 12 & 10 (v) Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment, 553 Brigade, 1 Mechanized Infantry Regiment, 551 Brigade, 19 (v) Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment, 18 (v) Sri Lanka Light Infantry and 552 Brigade.
Cleaning of the wards at Jaffna Teaching Hospital, Repainting of furniture in the Jaffna Hospital, Repairs to drainage and water supply systems, minor repairs to ambulances, removal of polythene and garbage, donation of reading glass frames to patients, donation of school books to libraries, repainting of hospital wards at Thelippalai, Kodaikadu hospital and children's homes, cleaning projects in schools, churches, Kovil premises, waysides, etc were among multiple service projects, carried out by separate groups of soldiers in the above-mentioned Divisions throughout the day.|
Meanwhile, religious observances on account of anniversary arrangements commenced on Tuesday (17) morning with a Hindu Pooja at Maviddapuram Sri Skantha temple. The same evening, senior officers and other ranks took part in Islamic prayers at Jumma Mosque in the Jaffna town. The following day (18), Catholic mass was held at Ottahapulam St. Mary’s church, Atchuvely and a Bodhi Pooja Pinkama at Sri Naga Vihara, Jaffna.
Military formalities meanwhile took place on 19 June by placing flower wreaths at the War Hero monument, Palaly in memory of fallen War Heroes. SFHQ-J Commander and senior officers paid floral tributes to fallen War Heroes.
SFHQ-J Commander, All General Officers Commanding, Brigade Commanders, Unit Commanders and Commanding Officers, together with their troops at respective units actively participated in those community-oriented projects.
