The newly-founded Jaffna Branch of the Sri Lanka Ex-servicemen’s Association had its first social gathering at its new office premises in the Army-managed Civil Affairs and Public Relations Office complex in Jaffna on Friday (20) under the aegis of Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe, Commander, Security Force Headquarters - Jaffna (SFHQ-J).
For the first time in the history of Jaffna, those ex-servicemen, most of them, now in their dotage, assembled together with their spouses and next of kin for a social get-together that evening at the invitation of Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe, Chief Guest at the occasion.
The event also coincided with the formal opening of the new Ex-servicemen’s Office in Jaffna where those invited ex-servicemen were feted and presented with gift parcels, each worth more than Rs 4000/=. In addition, gift parcels containing school accessories were given away to children and grand children of those ex-servicemen who defended the territorial integrity of the country while they were in Army service.
It turned out to be a meeting place for all erstwhile comrades of the tri-services in a spirit of camaraderie and nostalgic feelings as they had never met with one another after retirement although many of them are still living in the north of the country.
Representatives of Sri Lanka Ex-Servicemen’s Association Colombo, Regional Director of Health Services - Jaffna Dr. A. Ketheeswaran, Deputy Secretary Ministry of Education Northern Province Mr. P. Vigneswaran, General Officers Commanding of different Divisions under the SFHQ-J and a large gathering of invitees attended the ceremony.
