The final cluster of families, displaced during LTTE terrorism went back to their original homesteads in Vadamarachchi east Sunday (03) bringing curtains down on resettlement of the displaced in the Jaffna peninsula.
At the final phase, 1110 members of 297 families who had been living at Ramavil IDP Welfare Centre in Kodikamam until Sunday (3) were resettled in Pokkarappu, Kevil, Mulliyan and Vettalaikerny Grama Niladhari Divisions under Maruthankerni Divisional Secretariat. Those civilians abandoned those residential areas in January 2009 as the war against terrorism was reaching a decisive phase.
During the ceremony held in connection with return of those lands to their owners, Hon. Minister of Economic Development Mr. Basil Rajapaksa, the Chief Guest was full of praise to the Commander, Security Forces Jaffna (SF-J) and his troops serving in the peninsula for their commendable role for completion of the resettlement process in the peninsula.
In response to a request of the Jaffna District Secretary Mrs. Emelda Sukumar for possible speedy arrangements for early resettlement in the Jaffna Peninsula, the Security Forces Headquarters, Jaffna mobilized additional Army Engineer troops to assist foreign de-mining agencies in their humanitarian de-mining campaigns.
On directions given by Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe, Commander SF-J, the Vettalaikerny-based 55 Division completed construction of permanent houses for ten poor families in Kevil area under Pokkarappu Grama Niladhari division and their keys were symbolically handed over to those recipients on the same occasion.
Houses for others too are to be constructed by the Army. The government has taken all measures to develop necessary infrastructure for the resettled. Hospitals, co-operative shops, schools including public transport facilities are already in place for the newly resettled families.
Hon. Minister and other distinguished invitees distributed domestic items among civilians as a token of assistance to recommence their living.
A new bus service from Maruthankerny to Point Pedro via Nagar Kovil shuttles back and forth to provide transport facilities for the newly resettled. This route remained closed for civilians all this time due to threat of landmines and UXOs (Unexploded Ordnance). A cooperative shop was also set up at Kevil on the same day.
Hon. Minister of Traditional Industries and Small Enterprises Development Mr. Douglas Devananda, Governor Northern Province Maj. Gen.(Retd) G.A. Chandrasiri, Commander SF-J Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe and a large gathering of government officials and civilians attended the occasion.
