Island-wide Army Formations Celebrate National New Year

Various Army formations around the country celebrated the Sinhala and Hindu New Year organizing traditional New Year festivals and many other auspicious events.

Security Forces Headquarters, Jaffna (SFHQ-J) organized a grand musical entertainment at Hartley College grounds at Point Pedro soon after the New Year rituals were over. The arrangement organized by the SFHQ-J in coordination with the ITN TV channel drew a huge crowd and the musical event was coloured by a pantheon of both local and Indian artistes and singers. The musical extravaganza that went into late night on Friday (15) was attended by the Jaffna Commander, Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe. Soldiers also joined the crowd enjoying as melodies of both Tamil, Sinhala and Indian rent the air.  

On 14th April, the main spectacle took place at Velvettithurai giving pride of place to the rites and rituals, associated with New Year traditions. Mrs Imelda Sugumar, District Secretary for Jaffna and Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe, Commander, SFHQ-J took part in the inaugural festival.

Meanwhile, several Divisions and Brigades under the Security Forces Headquarters, Wanni (SFHQ-W) organized a series of separate New Year festivals during the week.

Soldiers under 61 Division attached to 611 Brigade and 613 Brigade in Vellankulam, Kidavur Pampaimadhu, Kaduveppankulam and Thchchanamarathamadu areas had their New Year festivals separately in respective areas with the participation of both civilians and soldiers in the area.    

In the meantime, officers and members of the Seva Vanitha Units, attached to Sri Lanka Army Medical Corps (SLAMC) units, stationed round the country had their New Year festivals at Habarana, Kilinochchi, Mannar, Pooneryn, Vavuniya, Welioya, Aiyakachchi, Warani and a few other places.

After lighting traditional oil lamps and performing other rituals, traditional sweet meats were served to the SLAMC troops at those respective places. A large number of officers and soldiers attended those events.
