Islamic Religious Rites Invoke Blessings on Forthcoming Army Anniversary

The famous and most sacred Dawatagaha Jumma Masjid Mosque at Colombo Town Hall junction welcomed the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya on Wednesday (5) evening when he, alongside his senior officers visited the shrine to receive blessings on the forthcoming Army’s 62nd Anniversary and Army Day (October 10).

The customary Islamic religious prayers, led by Maulavis, Rev Sayed Hassan, Rev Rauf and Rev Faizalkari commenced after the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Chief Guest at the praying ceremony lit the mosque’s oil lamp and garlanded the holy place, Ziharath of Sheik Usman Valiyullah in keeping with Islamic traditions.

Maulavis in their prayers commended the Army for its invaluable services both in battlefields and peacetime and spoke high of its contribution towards nation building and development across the country. They also praised the Army Commander’s able guidance and leadership and the Army’s commitment towards sustenance of long-lasting peace in the country.

Towards the end of the Islamic religious rites, the Commander of the Army, at the request of the mosque’s Managing Trustee, Mr Reyyaz M. Salley, signed the VIP book in the mosque and made a monetary contribution towards development and renovation of the mosque before the Commander’s exit.

Senior officers, Chairman, Army Muslim Association and a gathering of representative regiments took part in the religious ceremony.

Wednesday’s religious ceremony was the third leg of the series of commemorative events that has been organized in connection with the 62nd Army Anniversary. Both Buddhist and Hindu religious observances took place respectively in Anuradhapura and Kotahena earlier on Saturday (Oct 01) and Tuesday (Oct 04).
