India’s Visiting Southern Commander Salutes Memories of IPKF Jawans

The three-member Indian delegation, headed by General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Southern Command of the Indian Army, Lieutenant General P.M Hariz PVSM AVSM SM VSM ADC, currently in Sri Lanka on a four-day goodwill visit (August 17 - 20) Thursday (17) afternoon paid their homage to the Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) war memorial at Battaramulla and laid floral wreaths in commemoration of their supreme sacrifices in the fight against LTTE terrorists during late 1980s.

Major General Sudath Perera, Director General, Directorate of Personal Administration Army received the guests on arrival at the memorial as the troops of the Sri Lanka Corps of Military Police remained on vigil to begin commemorative proceedings.

Amid honours, presented by troops of the Sri Lanka Corps of Military Police, Lieutenant General P.M Hariz of the Indian Army walked to the memorial and placed a floral wreath during the solemn ceremony. The IPKF troops served Sri Lanka during 1987-1989 at the invitation of the government in that period.

Sounding of the Last Post in accordance with military traditions brought the brief ceremony to end.
