Mrs. Nirupama Rao, the newly – appointed Indian High Commissioner for Sri Lanka along with a couple of high level delegates and diplomats toured Jaffna last weekend in a bid to explore possibilities of extending her country's assistance to the development of the peninsula.
The delegation, headed by Mrs. Nirupama Raso included Mrs. S Krishnamoorthy, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Health in India, Captain Suraj Barry, Defence Advisor and Mr. Sunjay Sudhir, First Secretary (Economy & Commerce). On their arrival at the Palaly Airport, they were received by Major General S. D Tennakoon, Commander, Security Forces Headquarters Jaffna.
As first leg of their tour, they attended a special Pooja at the historic Nallur Kandasamy Kovil prior to their visit to the Manthikai Base Hospital at Point Pedro. Dr. Jeganadan, District Medical Officer briefed the visiting delegates on the needs of the hospital and proposed development plans of the hospital. Delegates also did not fail to speak to a section of the inmates before they paid a visit to the nearby Vallipulam Kovil.
Indian High Commissioner and her retinue also called on Swami Chithroopanandan at the Sarda Seva (Sri Ramakrishna) Ashram and obtained his blessings. Next stop was at the Jaffna hospital. Dr Raviraj, Director accompanied the delegates round the wards at the hospital, enabling them to obtain a firsthand account of the needs of the hospital.
Major General S.D Tennakoon coordinated all matters in connection with their visit to the Jaffna Peninsula.
