ICRC TRAINS SRI LANKAN PEACE KEEPERS ON PRINCIPLES OF HUMANITARIAN LAW

Press Release
AT the request of the Sri Lanka Army, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) held several training programmes on International Humanitarian Law (IHL) for Army personnel, scheduled to leave for Haiti shortly on UN peace keeping support missions.

These programmes took place on 13th and 17th of May at the Institute of Peace Support Operations Training Sri Lanka (IPSOTSL) in Kukuleganga.

More than 800 Army personnel including officers benefited from these pre deployment training sessions, aimed at creating awareness about the basic rules of IHL and the ICRC activities worldwide as well as in Haiti.

The ICRC has conducted pre deployment training programmes on IHL to over 2500 members of the armed forces en route to peace keeping missions in Haiti and Lebanon since 2005.

"Briefings and trainings on IHL for different audiences are an important part of the ICRC's work around the world in supporting States to ensure that knowledge of IHL is widespread and its principles understood", said Paul Castella, Head of the ICRC in Sri Lanka. "IHL principles are applicable not only during hostilities but also when addressing the consequences of fighting when hostilities are over". (Ends)
