Hundreds of Villagers &;amp; SF Personnel Educated on Conservation of Forests in 3-Day Seminar


About 350 villagers, together with military officers, Police personnel, civil coordination officers and officials of the Forest Conservation Department attended a three-day long awareness programme on ‘Forest Management’, organized at Teligarey, Poonaryn by the 661 Brigade, 5 (v) Mechanized Infantry Regiment and the 66 Divisional Headquarters on the directions of the Security Force Headquarters, Kilinochchi (SFHQ-KLN).

Highlighting the importance of conservation of jungle patches against illicit timber-felling, sand-mining and clearing of jungles for cultivations, etc, Professor K. Karunathilaka, Dean, Social Science Faculty, University of Kelaniya and Mr Thanigasam, Forest Officer at Forest Conservation Office, Poonaryn with few other officers, conducted lectures under this programme at Teligarey during April 19-21.

More than 350 civilians, 20 Forest Conservation Officials, 661 Brigade Commander, Senior Superintendent of Police, Poonaryn, Officer in Charge in Poonaryn Police Station, 66 Division Civil Coordination Officers and several other state officials in the area listened to these lectures with interest and attention.

This was the first time an awareness programme on this subject was conducted in the area, served by 5 (v) Mechanized Infantry Regiment following initiatives, taken by the 661 Brigade on the directions of the SFHQ-KLN.
