Huge Crowds Throng to Witness Matara Army Searchlight Tattoo

The year’s most attractive military spectacle, the precursor to the forthcoming 62nd Army anniversary celebrations was ceremonially opened Friday (23) afternoon at Matara Uyanwatta Ground.

The Searchlight Tattoo was declared open to the public by Air Marshal H.D Abeywickrama, Commander who graced the inauguration as Chief Guest. He was received on arrival by Major General R.M.D Ratnayake, Chief of Staff, Army Headquarters. The Searchlight Tattoo will remain open to the public starting at 2.30 p.m. on all three days until Sunday (25) evening.

Holding of the Tattoo at provincial Matara coincides with the government’s policy of taking major public events for display, away from Colombo since such shifting benefits local denizens as well as development in respective regions.

A massive crowd lined up since Friday (23) morning to buy entrance tickets to the year’s biggest display, perhaps the first one in the Southern Province.

The Army ‘Searchlight Tattoo’ at Matara highlights an assortment of undisputed skills of the Army, including displays of simulation attacks and rescue of hostages, free fall parachute jumps, dog shows, demonstration of constructing the Bailey bridge, assembling of the artillery guns and jeeps, stunt riding, talent show of disable War Heroes, Ranabera and Bugle displays, multi media shows of humanitarian operations, physical training, fire works, model attacks on enemy strongholds, drills, etc.

This mega spectacle at provincial level offers the public in the Southern Province a good broader view of the country’s largest military show that showcases multiplicity of different multitasking nature of the Army at one specific venue.

Special transport services have been organized in connection with the ‘Searchlight Tattoo’ and entry tickets are available at main entrances to the ground.
