Highlanders' Retiring Major General Nandana Dunuwila Appreciated for His Committed Service

Major General Nandana Dunuwila of Gemunu Watch GW), the former General Officer Commanding of the 56 Division on the verge of his retirement from the Army after a committed service of more than three decades was invited to the office of the Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army, General Shavendra Silva this morning (19) in order to receive appreciative commendation and best wishes of the Army Chief.

Major General Nandana Dunuwila, one of the most senior officers, groomed by the GW who has served a number of key appointments in the Army completed more than three decades of dedicated service and contributed to the uplift of professional standards of the GW in particular. General Shavendra Silva during the brief interaction refreshed memories and shared a few thoughts with the retiring Major General Nandana Dunuwila while appreciating projects he undertook as the General Officer Commanding, 56 Division during these critical times with the outbreak of the epidemic.

Major General Nandana Dunuwila as a warrior in the Gemunu Watch during humanitarian operations actively contributed to Vadamarachchi operations and several other offensives against terrorism before the war ended. Major General Nandana Dunuwila also commanded the 12th Battalion of the Gemunu Watch at the peak of Humanitarian Operations and displayed his great leadership which also contributed to the eradication of the separatist terrorism from the motherland.

The outgoing Senior Officer also thanked the Commander of the Army for his wishes and the thoughtfulness while mentioning the encouragement he received from the Army Chief in the performance of his duties while the Army Chief was holding different offices in the past few years as well.

Towards the end of the interaction, General Shavendra Silva awarded a special memento to the retiree as a symbol of appreciation and commendation of his more than three-decade of service to the Army.

In appreciation of his bravery and dedicated services, the outoing Major General was awarded the Rana Wickrama Padakkama (RWP) and Rana Sura Padakkama (RSP) twice and also the Uttama Sewa Padakkama (USP) for his unblemished service to the Sri Lanka Army a few years ago. In the year 2018, he was appointed the Centre Commandant of the RHQ GW where he rendered a great service for the betterment of the Gemunu Watch with many innovative concepts. His commitments to the success of the 'Mithrashakthi Exercise' remain notable in the Army.
