In what could be considered and recorded in the annals of the Gajaba Regiment (GR) history as a rare spectacle of contemporary times, six newly-promoted GR Majors General were hosted to a grand felicitation on Thursday (20) at the GR Regimental Centre HQ at Saliyapura after all of them were invited to the venue.
Major General W.M.J.R.K Senaratne, Major General N.D Senarath Niwunhella, Major General H.L.V.M Liyanage, Major General H.M.T.B Hangilipola, Major General N.R Lamahewage and Major General K.P Nugegoda who were earlier offered best wishes by none other than the Colonel of the Regiment, Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva, the acting Chief of Defence Staff, Commander of the Army and Special Forces after inviting them to the Army HQ,
The newly promoted two star Majors General were warmly welcomed by the Centre Commandant, Colonel Mahinda Rajapakshe on arrival at the venue on behalf of the Colonel of the Regiment. Afterwards, a colourful Guard Turnout greeted them before the Centre Commandant and All Ranks of the Gajaba Regiment welcomed them. Then, they paid tribute to the 'Father of the Gajaba Regiment' late Major General Vijaya Wimalaratne by placing floral wreaths at the statue. After that, Majors General were honoured by six separate Guards of Honors at the Parade ground, a spectacle unprecedented in the recent living memory and would inevitably signal a historic phenomenon in the prestigious GR saga.
Showing ties of strong bonds of brotherhood, all ranks joined for tea with newly-promoted Majors General towards the end of the day's proceedings. Members of the Regimental Council, Deputy Centre Commandant, Senior Officers, Staff Officers, Commanding Officers and Other Ranks were associated with the historic ceremony.
