BEING COMMITTED to peace talks does not preclude military action against the LTTE, the government said yesterday.
Media Minister Anura Priyadharsahna Yapa, addressing the weekly Cabinet press briefing in Colombo, said that there was no change in the governments desire to achieve peace, but appropriate action needs to be taken against on-going LTTE atrocities.
\'Wednesday\'s claymore mine triggered by the LTTE was the second such attack on civilians in Kebitigollawe. It took sixteen lives and injured 23. Terrorism is a global phenomenon and has to be dealt with accordingly.\'
Among the dead was the \'Divaina\' Newspaper Kebitigollawe correspondent W. Gunasinghe. Pledging to provide security to the public, Yapa queried where the NGO's which condemn security forces operations against the LTTE were. \'None of them have criticized Wednesday\'s killings.\' He appealed to the public to be vigilant since it would help the authorities deal with any future LTTE threats.
