Sri Lanka Army’s one more leading project, ‘Army Inter Regiment Road Marathon’ with hundreds of athletes, got underway for the 50th consecutive year on Sunday (26), near the Parliament grounds at Battaramulla.
The mega road run, competed this year by more than 250 athletes from 23 Regiments of the Army, traces its history back to the year 1951 and this year’s Golden Anniversary Marathon was organized on a grand scale, following elaborate arrangements, put in place by the Sri Lanka Army Athletics Association, chaired by Major General Amal Karunasekara and the support extended by authorities in the Sri Lanka Athletics Association, Ministry of Sports and several other authoritative state officials.
In the Men’s category, Private D.A.D Sandaruwan of Sri Lanka Engineers (SLE) clinched the first place with a record 1 hour, and 8 minutes and 18 seconds, Lance Corporal G.L. Samarajeewa of Sri Lanka Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (SLEME), the second place and Private Y.P.M. Gunathilake of Sri Lanka Army Service Corps (SLASC) claiming the third slot respectively.
In the Women’s category, Private D.M.P.H. Madushika of 4 (V) Sri Lanka Army Women’s Corps (SLAWC) was the first and Private H.M.N.K. Senevirathna and Private L.T. Sewwandi of 6 (V) SLAWC became second and third in the encounter.
Meanwhile, the Sri Lanka Army Service Corps (SLASC) team won the Men’s Group Championship for the fifth consecutive year while Sri Lanka Artillery (SLA) and Sri Lanka Light Infantry (SLLI) Regiment teams, secured second and third places respectively. In the women’s group category, 6 SLAWC team won the championship for the third time.
Championship trophies, shields and merit awards were awarded to the winners by Major General Karunasekara and other senior officers who were present at the Ranaviru War Memorial premises at Battaramulla.
