Gemunu Watch-Renovated Main School Building Re-opened for Use

Gemunu Watch (GW) troops at Kuruwita GW Regimental Headquarters using their own Regimental funds fulfilled a long-felt need at Ratnapura / Kalawana Model Primary School by way of fully renovating its main building after more than 50 years of its construction.

In response to a request made to the Commander of the Army by a group of concerned parents, the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Crisanthe De Silva instructed Major General Upul Vithanage, Colonel of the Regiment, GW to provide assistance and attend to the matter as early as possible.

Accordingly, GW troops together with Engineer troops at the Regimental Headquarters undertook the project and completed its full renovation within a few weeks at a cost of Rs 7 lakhs before it was symbolically vested in the principal.

For the re-opening of the renovated school building Major General Upul Vithanage was invited as the Chief Guest for the occasion by school authorities. Amid chanting of Seth Pirith by members of the Maha Sangha, headed by Ven. Kukulegama Sumana Nayake Thero, Adhikarana Sanghanayake for Kukulugama Nawadun Dekorale, Major General Vithanage re-opened the building.

Centre Commandant, GW, Deputy Centre Commandant, GW, Mr Premasiri, Manager at Teachers’ Training Centre, Educational Zone, Kalawana, Mr Anura Gamarachchi, Principal, Officers, Other Rankers of the Regiment, students and their parents, villagers and a gathering of invitees attended the day’s event.
