Garbage Left Behind by Pilgrims at Kataragama Cleaned Up

Troops at 12 Division serving in the Security Forces - Central (SF-C) carried out a Shramadana campaign (cleaning programme) in the Vedasiti Kanda temple premises and its surrounding areas during July 22 - 23 in order to clean the heaps of garbage, left behind by the pilgrims who attended the recent Kataragama Esala Festival.

In response to a request of Ven. Heelle Gnanananda Thero, incumbent, Vedasiti Kanda temple, under instructions of the Commander, SF-C, the Brigade Commander of the 122 Brigade, deployed about 20 Army personnel to do the job.

Troops participating in the Shramadana collected polythene and shopping bags, newspapers, refuse of fruits, plastic cans and bottles and different kinds of litter amounting to a few tons. Troops also helped Urban Council Authorities to take them away for disposal.

Brigade Commander and several senior officers visited the scene while the cleaning campaign was underway.
