Gampaha Wickramarachchi Institute Elevated to the Status of University of Indigenous Medicine

The inaugural launch ceremony of the Gampaha Wickramarachchi University of Indigenous Medicine (GWUIM) at Yakkala took place on Thursday (4) at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall, graced by HE the President Gotabaya Rajapaksa as the day's Chief Guest.

On a Presidential directive, General Shavendra Silva, Chief of Defence Staff, Commander of the Army, troops of the Army completed the construction of the entire university complex in a record time of few months.

Professor Janitha A Liyanage, Vice Chancellor of Gampaha Wickramarachchi University of Indigenous Medicine warmly welcomed the day's Chief Guest to the ceremonial occasion with Prof. G.L Peiris, Hon Minister of Education, Prof. Kapila Perera, Secretary to Ministry of Education, Chief of Defence Staff, Commander of the Army and Head of the National Operations Centre for Prevention of COVID 19 Outbreak (NOCPCO), General Shavendra Silva, Senior Prof. Sampath Amaratunge, Chairman, UGC and a few other special invitees.

After traditional Kandyan 'Ves' dancers ushered distinguished guests for lighting of the traditional oil lamp to kick off the day's sequence of events, Prof. Janitha A. Liyanage made the welcome note and invited the Chief Guest to launch the Logo of the University, Flag of the University and the University Anthem, plus the website of the new university. Leaving complimentary remarks on the historic day when the Gampaha Wickramarachchi Ayurveda Institute (GWAI) was elevated to be a full-fledged university, HE the President signed the Visitors' Book at the GWUIM.

Induction of the Chancellor at GWUIM took place next after the Bursar, GWUIM took him to the stage while the Registrar, GWUIM ushered H.E the President to the stage with the Vice Chancellor where Sahithya Chakravarthi, Anunayaka thero of Malwatta Chapter, Venerable Dr. Niyangoda Dharmakeerthi Sri Sangarakkitha Vijithasiri Thero, Chancellor was presented the 'Vijini Patha' to the new Chancellor of the GWUIM, symbolizing the honorary appointment. A video footage displayed the functions of the GWUIM and proposed projects too.

Prof. G.L. Peris, Minister of Education, Prof. Sampath Amaratunge Chairman, University Grants Commission and Prof. K. Kapila C.K.
