The Gajaba Regiment Centre at Saliyapura and the Gajaba Regiment Seva Vanitha Branch joined hands together to offer scholarships for 162 selected children of serving, retired and fallen War Heroes and civil staffers of Gajaba Regiment during a simple ceremony on Saturday (Jan 21) at the Gajaba Regimental Centre at Saliyapura.
The project was initiated on a conceptual notion of Mrs Janaki Liyanage, President, Army Seva Vanitha Unit and Chairperson, Gajaba Regiment Seva Vanitha Branch under the guidance of Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage, Commander of the Army who is also the Colonel of the Regiment in the Gajaba Regiment. He attended the event along with Mrs Janaki Liyanage as chief guests on the occasion.
The itinerary began with the lighting of the traditional oil lamp, and after the observance of a two-minute silence to remember fallen War Heroes, the Army Chief addressed the gathering. Aesthetic feats performed by the Army cultural team added colour to the event.
During the ceremony, 102 students who passed the Grade Five scholarship examination, 36 Students who passed the Advanced Level Examination,11 qualified for university entrance and 13 of specially selected differently able children, each received monetary assistance in addition to a stock of stationery and school equipment.
At the culmination of the distribution ceremony, a student delivered the vote of thanks and expressed their gratitude.
