Former Combatants in CSD to Receive Free Artificial Legs & Limbs on Commander’s Directions

On a broad-hearted humanitarian gesture, extended by General Shavendra Silva, Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army, the Civil Security Department (CSD), together with the Army Directorate of Rehabilitation would provide new artificial legs and limbs to 64 former LTTE combatants (male and female), serving the CSD.

The historic project that got to a start during 5 - 6 April at Anuradhapura ‘Abimansala-1’ saw Army technicians at ‘Abimansala-1’ prosthetics and orthotics workshop take measurements for provision of free of charge prosthetics and orthotics to 64 male and female former LTTE combatants who have been serving the CSD after they were fully rehabilitated by the office of the Commissioner General of Rehabilitation soon after the war ended in May 2009.

Under the project, most of those former combatants who lost their legs and limbs due to LTTE landmines, explosive devices and booby traps were subsequently rehabilitated and brought to mainstream society as law-abiding citizens of the country after the government during 2010 - 2012 provided them with employment in the CSD despite their physical disabilities.

Those physically-handicapped personnel still on CSD service, serving North and East of the country were invited to the ‘Abimansala-1’ on a suggestion, made by Major General Nissanka Senadeera (Retd), Director General, CSD through the coordination of Major General Shiran Abeysekara, Director General, Directorate of Rehabilitation of the Army, providing them with transport and other facilities.

On a directive of the Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army, General Shavendra Silva, those artificial legs and limbs to the value of about Rs 4 m were to be donated to those former combatants before the end of April, this year.

The Sri Lanka Army on an initiative of the Commander of the Army a few months ago commenced production of artificial legs and limbs at two Army-run wellness resorts for physically-handicapped War Heroes, thus saving a fair amount of foreign exchange for the country.

Similarly, physically-handicapped civilians, including those who sustained injuries during the war against LTTE terrorists are requested to receive technical repair services of those two prosthetics and orthotics workshops, free of charge in accordance with instructions given by the Commander of the Army. Those wishing to receive such free technical support are kindly requested to contact Tel Nos: 011-2958077 (Ragama Ranaviru Sevana) and 025-2225151 (Anuradhapura Abimansala-1) for more information. best Running shoes | Nike for Men
