Formal Military Ceremony Bids Farewell to the Outgoing Commander of the Army

A formal farewell ceremony marked the departure of the 24th Commander of the Army, General Vikum Liyanage RWP RSP ndu, at the Regimental Headquarters of the Sri Lanka Light Infantry (SLLI), Panagoda, on 30th December 2024.

Upon his arrival, the Commander of the Army, accompanied by a motorcade and riders, was received by Brigadier J.K.R.P Jayasinghe RWP RSP USP, the Centre Commandant of the SLLI. In keeping with military tradition, the outgoing Commander reviewed the Guard Turnout presented by troops of the SLLI Regiment.

The highlight of the ceremony was the formal parade held in honour of the outgoing Commander. Major General W.P.A.D.W. Nanayakkara RSP VSV USP ndu, Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Army and Colonel of the Regiment of the Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment, welcomed the Army Chief and ushered him to the saluting dais. Following the protocol, the Parade Commander, Major General U.K.D.D.P Udugama RWP RSP USP ndc psc, the appointed Director General General Staff, formally reported to the Chief Guest before the inspection of the Ceremonial Parade.

During an All-Ranks tea session, the outgoing Commander of the Army engaged with Officers and Other Ranks sharing his thoughts. He later addressed Principal Staff Officers and Field Commanders at the Army Headquarters, expressing gratitude for their unwavering support throughout his command.

The ceremonial handing over of duties took place in the Commander’s Office, where the new Commander of the Army, Major General Lasantha Rodrigo RSP psc IG of the Sri Lanka Artillery, assumed his responsibilities. This was followed by a group photograph with Principal Staff Officers. A photograph of the outgoing Commander was also unveiled at the Commander's Office, serving as a lasting tribute in the place where many important decisions were made. The outgoing Commander then penned his final remarks in the visitors' book.

The ceremony concluded with a traditional street-line salute, during which Principal Staff Officers, Directors, Senior Officers and Other Ranks assembled to bid farewell to the outgoing Commander. The dignified procession, accompanied by the resonant chants of "Jaya Sri, Jaya Sri," symbolised the deep respect and admiration for a leader who dedicated two years and seven months to elevating the Army’s professionalism and prestige.

Similarly, a traditional Mess Night was held at the Multi-Facility Complex at Maitland Place on the same evening.
