Major General Ajith Kariyakarawana, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Army and the Colonel of the Regiment, Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment (VIR) who just retired from the Sri Lanka Army after completion of 36 years of unblemished service in the organization was saluted and appreciated in a series of ceremonies, staged by the VIR Regimental Headquarters on Sunday (21) at Boyagane.
The day’s itinerary got to a start upon his arrival at the premises where he was honoured in a formal Guard Turn Out, presented by VIR soldiers at the Regimental Headquarters before he was conducted to revere the memories of fallen War Heroes at the VIR War Hero memorial and statues of VIR Parama Weera Vibhushana (PWV) recipients with flowers.
A few minutes later, a colourful Guard of Honour in conformity with military traditions saluted the departing Colonel of the Regiment in the parade ground. Major General Kariyakarawana together with the Parade Commander reviewed the parade and received the salute from the special dais.
A few minutes later, the outgoing Colonel of the Regiment symbolically handed over the office of the Colonel of the Regiment at the Headquarters premises to the new Colonel of the Regiment, Major General Chandana Gunawardene before Major General Kariyakarawana made his final address to the all ranks who had gathered there, in which he wholeheartedly thanked and spoke high of the support and commitment of all VIR Officers and Other Rankers for the Regiment in general.
As the final segment of the VIR farewell programme, he was hosted to a banquet dinner where he was presented with a memento in appreciation of his service to the Regiment.
During the same event at ‘The Salute’ reception hall, Mrs Anuja Kariyakarawana, the outgoing Chairperson of the VIR Seva Vanitha Unit was also presented with a token of appreciation by Mrs Shiromi Gunawardene, the incoming Chairperson, VIR Seva Vanitha Unit.
