First Man-made ‘Ravindu Wapi’ Tank & Gymnasium in Palali Army Cantonment Vested in Jaffna Troops

Irrigational expertise of Jaffna-based Army troops, attempting to harness the sun’s rays as a source of energy dug a new tank reservoir in Palaly with a state-of-the art spillway, sluice gate and a walking track around, and inaugurated it for the benefit of Jaffna troops during a simple ceremony, held on the banks of the new tank this morning (18).

The Palaly Tank, named ‘Ravindu Wapi’, dug and constructed jointly by 10 Field Engineers Regiment and 5 Corps of Engineer Service Regiment troops under the guidance of the Commander, Security Forces-Jaffna, Major General Ruwan Wanigasooriya was vested in the troops by Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva, Chief of Defence Staff, Commander of the Army and Head of the National Operation Centre for Prevention of COVID-19 Outbreak (NOCPCO) currently in Jaffna to inaugurate a few more community and Army projects.

The day’s Chief Guest unveiled a plaque, planted a sapling by the side of the tank bund and declared it open for the troops serving the Security Force HQ-Jaffna. He also afterwards trekked round this tank bund and had a closer view of the surroundings in the company of Jaffna Commander and a few Senior Officers.

The technical supervision and partial funding assistance were provided by the Irrigation Engineer in Jaffna at the request of the SFHQ-J. This is considered as the only tank with a spillway within the region and expects to store much-needed rain water resource while geologically contributing to the enrichment of water retention in surrounding areas.

The name, ‘Ravindu Wapi’ semantically meaning that it would harness the energy of the rays of the rising sun for the well-being Jaffna, has a capacity to retain some 65 cubic meter of rainy water and covers 900m in perimeter.

Commander, Security Forces - Jaffna, General Officers Commanding, 51, 52 & 55 Divisions and the Commander Forward Maintenance Area (North) along with Senior Army Officers and troops witnessed the day's inauguration. The ceremony was conducted to suit health guidelines.

In the meantime, Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva at the invitation of Major General Ruwan Wanigasooriya, Commander, Security Forces - Jaffna opened the re-equipped All Ranks Gymnasium and the Fitness Centre with all modern accessories inside the Palaly Army Cantonment this afternoon (18).

The event’s Chief Guest after a while added memories to his visit by planting a sapling in the premises. Afterwards, he unveiled a plaque, cut a ribbon and formally opened the Gymnasium.

The construction work of the Gymnasium was completed with Army funds and manpower of the troops under the Security Force Headquarters - Jaffna. In addition to fully equipped gymnasium and international standard Badminton Court, the Complex is equipped with a Tennis Court, Basketball Court and a Volleyball Court. The ceremony followed a troops address, made by the Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army.
