First Lady Graces 'Children’s Day' Commemoration at SERRIC

The Army-managed ‘Senehasa’ Education Resource Research & Information Centre (SERRIC) at Manning town for children in military families with special needs marked the World Children’s Day on Thursday (1) with elaborate arrangements inviting Mrs Ioma Rajapaksa, First Lady as the Chief Guest and distinguished guests, including Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva, Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army, Vice Admiral Nishantha Ulugetenne, Navy Commander, Air Marshal Sumangala Dias, Air Force Commander, Mrs Sujeewa Nelson, Mrs. Chandima Ulugetenne, Mrs. Mayuri Prabhavi Dias spouses and parents.

The SERRIC while attaching prominence to needs of those children with disabilities and impairments, functions as the one and only such centre for military families and also as an information hub to learn, research and acquire knowledge for child development. Mrs Soniya Kottegoda is the Chief Supervising Official at SERRIC.

The day’s Chief Guest and invitees on arrival at the venue were welcomed by a few children, dressed in symbolic tri service uniforms offering bouquets of flowers. Those children afterwards had the opportunity of presenting their aesthetic skills before the guests in the ceremony who have been trained accordingly. SERRIC continues its training programme for those children and provides service as a day care centre with the support of child development experts.

The Chief Guest and other invitees also enjoyed a special documentary on all about the 'Senehasa'. Miss. Tharushi of the SERRIC delivered the welcome speech before children's aesthetic skills were displayed. The Chief Guest also launched the SERRIC Website at the same time at the invitation of the management.

The vote of thanks, delivered by Master Manmitha and closing remarks, made by the SERRIC Commandant, Brigadier Raja Gunasekara brought the day's meeting proceedings to culmination.

Towards the end of the day’s project, Mrs Ioma Rajapaksa freely interacted with each and every child and gave each of them a gift parcel on account of the World Children’s Day as all SENEHASA children rent the air with a song with Mr Lahiru Perera. They also sat for a group photograph with the day's Chief Guest adding memories to the occasion. The First Lady also planted a Mango sapling in the compound and left memories.

Chairperson of the Seva Vanitha Unit at the Ministry of Defence, Mrs Chithrani Gunaratne, Additional Secretary (Defence), MoD, Additional Secretary Finance, Ministry of Finance, Mrs Sujeewa Nelson, President, Army Seva Vanitha Unit (ASVU), Chiefs of Staff of tri forces, CSD Director General and his spouse, Chairman of the Ranaviru Sewa Authority and his spouse, experts and resource personnel were among those who attended the event.
