Fire at Ammo &;amp; Explosive Dump Doused with No Damages

A fire that broke out inside the ammunition and explosives dump building in the Field Engineers camp complex of the Army at Mattegoda, Kottawa this morning (2) around 7.23 a.m. was brought under control within 45 minutes with the support of the Fire Brigade.

The fire in this particular building, constructed with required precautionary measures and high technical standards however did not cause any damage to adjacent buildings, property or injury to Army personnel working there.

Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake on being informed of the incident, instructed Sri Lanka Corps of Military Police to conduct a thorough inquiry and Colonel Commandant of the Engineers Regiment to appoint a Court of Inquiry to investigate into the incident.

The ammunition and explosive dump had a stock of ammunition, explosives and a few hand grenades at the time it caught fire, despite the placement of a lightning protection post atop the building.

Investigations are on to ascertain the exact cause of the fire. (Ends)
