Fifty More War Hero (Ranaviru) Children Awarded Scholarships

FIFTY more children, belonging to War Heroes who sacrificed their lives, arms and limbs to create peace in Sri Lanka were offered scholarships this morning (22) during a brief ceremony organized by Seva Vanitha Army Branch (SVAB). 

Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army graced the occasion as chief guest on the invitation of the SVAB President Mrs Manjulika Jayasuriya.

One of Sri Lanka’s leading bankers, Merchant Bank of Sri Lanka (MBSL) and its wing, Merchant Credit of Sri Lanka (MCSL) has generously sponsored each child with a monthly grant of Rs. 1000/= deposited in savings books. Recipients of those scholarships have been screened and selected at Regimental levels, giving priority for children of War Heroes who fought during the successful fight against terrorists in the last phase of the humanitarian operation.            
 
The first ten savings books were given away by Commander to proud small boys and girls whose fathers rendered a yeomen service for restoration of peace in the country. They will continue to receive Rs. 1000/- per month continuously for one and half years from the donors, MBSL and MCSL. 
  
SVAB President Mrs. Manjulika Jayasuriya, Mr. Gamini Karunathilake, Executive Officer, MBSL and Mr. Hafish Rajudeen, Executive Officer of MCSL later on joined the distribution of forty remaining scholarships to the children.

School bags were also given to those children.

Messrs Gamini Karunathilaka, Hafish Rajudeen and Sanjaya Ranatunge of the MBSL addressed the gathering.

Ms Amitha Samarasinghe, Assistant Director MBSL presented a memento to the former SVAB President Mrs. Anoma Fonseka in appreciation of her services to the SVAB. The incumbent SVAB President Mrs. Manjulika Jayasuriya accepted it on behalf Mrs. Fonseka as she was not available on the occasion.

Towards the end of the day’s programme, Medha Amashani, the daughter of Staff Sergeant D.G.T Sagara of the Special Force who became disable in the final war delivered the vote of thanks on behalf of all scholarship recipients.
