One of the battle-hardened War Heroes, Corporal (Retd) K.K.S.R.W.P Ratnayake of 11 Gemunu Watch (GW) who sustained injuries 7 times in terrorist attacks before May 2009 was the recipient of a new house, built in Digana, Kandy, following initiatives, taken by Major General Aruna Ariyasinghe, General Officer Commanding, 14 Division and Brigadier Priyanka Fernando, Director Army Quartering during a recent ceremony at the location.
The recipient, now on retirement under medical advice effectively and fearlessly contributed to the win over terrorists while fighting in the front line as the war was at its peak, but sustained severe injuries 7 times. Nevertheless, the unfailing warrior insisted on continued participation in offensives against terrorists until his medical condition finally compelled him to receive retirement.
The absence of a house of his own in the land was belatedly brought to the notice of the then Commanding Officer of the 11 GW, Brigadier Priyanka Fernando, a few months ago.
A few weeks later, an initiative of the General Officer Commanding, 14 Division, Major General Aruna Ariyasinghe who was the Brigade Commander at that time in Welioya during battles when the beneficiary sustained injuries, found the generous sponsor, Mr Suraj Sanjeewa de Silva, Chairman, Nugegoda Sevana Holdings (Pvt) Ltd for construction of the new house for this War Hero.
The financial support of the sponsor paved the way for the beneficiary’s own unit, 11 GW soldiers and its engineers to provide manpower and put up the new house on behalf of their erstwhile colleague within a few weeks.
During a simple ceremony, held at Digana, Kandy, the new house was recently vested in the retired War Hero in the presence of their family members and well-wishers.
