Fallen War Hero's Widowed Sergeant with Two Daughters Gifted New House

The family of a War Hero of the 10 Gajaba Regiment (GR) who laid his life in an LTTE claymore mine in Weppamkulam while fighting against terrorists in 2006, now resident in Kandy area was blessed to be the owners of a new house, worth about Rs 1.5 million, following initiatives taken by the Army Chief and the 11 Division General Officer Commanding (GOC).

General Shavendra Silva, Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army as the Chief Guest at the invitation of the 21 Division GOC Monday (12) afternoon during a simple ceremony that adhered to health guidelines, warmed the new Army-built home for the widowed, Sergeant R.A Aruna of 10 Gajaba Regiment with two daughters at Pilawala, Menikhinna and gifted a stock of furniture at the Commander's cost.

Both daughters of the fallen War Hero, Staff Sergeant R.A Aruna are studying in Grade 12 and Grade 10 classes at Kandy High School and were without their own home when the Directorate of Veterans' Affairs at the Army HQ and the GR Regimental Centre jointly came forward to erect the new house with the blessings of the Army Chief and the coordination of the 11 Division where the woman Sergeant is currently serving.

On arrival at the location, the day's Chief Guest was warmly received by the beneficiary and her daughters, Major General Ranjan Lamahewa, Commander Security Forces-Central and Major General Sarada Samarakoon, GOC 11 Division before brief religious proceedings got to a start.

As the auspicious minute struck, General Shavendra Silva with the recipient family amid chanting of 'Seth Pirith' cut a ribbon and warmed the new home. At the same moment, pieces of furniture to the value of Rs 2 lakhs, gifted by the Army Chief were also symbolically handed over to the family as incentives.

The deceased War Hero's own 10 Gajaba Regiment troops under the command of their Commanding Officer, Major Kingsly Samarasinghe contributed their technical expertise and manpower to construct this house after the foundation stone was laid in May last year.

Directorate of Veterans' Affairs released Rs 1.2 m for the project and a sum of Rs 3 lakhs was donated by the GR Regimental HQ towards the deserving project.

The beneficiaries during refreshments extended their deep gratitude to the Army Chief and all other main stakeholders for their thoughtfulness and valuable contribution towards realization of their dream.
