ESR Troops Assemble Together to Listen to Their Army Chief

Nearly 3000 officers and other ranks in the Engineer Service Regiment (ESR) who are actively sweating to rebuild the country’s post-war infrastructure with their unmatched vocational skills, assembled together at Panagoda ESR Regimental Headquarters on Thursday (26) to listen to the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake who made his first visit to the ESR Regimental Headquarters after he took office.

In conformity with military formalities, a Guard Turn Out presented arms to the visiting Commander at the entrance to the headquarters after he was received by Brigadier P.S.M Perera, Center Commandant, ESR.

Soon after Major General E.M.M Ambanpola, Colonel of the Regiment, ESR warmly welcomed the Chief Guest for the day, Lieutenant General Ratnayake was invited to the parade ground to receive the Guard of Honour, accorded in his honour.

A few minutes later, the Commander rose to his feet and addressed the packed audience, anxiously awaiting to listen to him. Lieutenant General Ratnayake told the officers and other ranks that the country has already witnessed the change, being effected by expertise of the ESR as the most leading workforce in the post-conflict Sri Lanka.

‘Like in any other country in the world, you all have a responsibility towards the nation since all peace-loving people expect to live a better life under a well structured infrastructure of the best standards. The government as well as the Ministry of Defence and Urban Development is fully confiding in us to do a praiseworthy piece of work which will bring honour to the organization you serve. Your varied talents have now found recognition and appreciation through dedicated hard work,’ the Commander added.

On the same occasion, Warrant Officer-I N.H.S Sanjeewa whose artistic talents, related to his creative decorations by way of Vesak lanterns, pandol-making and murals was awarded a cash gift of Rs 5 lakhs by ESR regiment.

Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake presented the cheque to that value to the Warrant Officer-I Sanjeewa amidst applause. It was the same Warrant Officer who had won many prizes for the best quality Vesak lanterns during Buddha Rashmi Vesak celebrations at Gangaramaya and in many other places in the past few years.

The Commander appreciated his talents and assured him of another cash prize of Rs 1 lakh if he succeeds in winning in the 2015 competitions, too.

Before the Chief Guest’s exit from the ESR Regimental Headquarters, Major General Ambanpola presented a special memento to Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake, signifying the importance of his visit to the Regimental Headquarters.
