Elle Players in SLAC & 6 (V) SLAWC Secure Championships

Elle players of the Sri Lanka Armoured Corps (SLAC) and 6 (V) Sri Lanka Army Women’s Corps (SLAWC) respectively secured Championship trophies in the Inter Regiment Elle tournament (men) and Inter Battalion Elle tournament (women) in the finals played on Saturday (30) at Gajaba Regimental Headquarters Sports Grounds, Saliyapura in Anuradapura.

SLAC players closely encountered Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment (VIR) team but ended up as the runners-up in the final round. Sri Lanka Light Infantry (SLLI) team became the second runners-up in the tournament. This is the 6th consecutive Elle victory of the SLAC troops.

Similarly, 6 (V) SLAWC and 5 (V) SLAWC under the Women’s category vied for the supremacy. However, 6 (V) SLAWC emerged victorious and pushed 5 (V) SLAWC players to the runners-up slot. 2 (V) SLAWC secured the second runners-up title.

The preliminary matches started last week where male teams from 15 regiments and 6 teams from the SLAWC completed for the trophies during 27 – 30 December. Those matches were played at the public grounds in Anuradapura and Saliyapura, Gajaba Regiment sports grounds. Men’s events were organized under four categories while woman players competed under two major categories.

Lance Corporal W.M.S.C Peris of the SLAC secured the award for the Best all-rounder (men) while Lance Corporal A.D Kumara of the SLAC was awarded best fielder in the tournament. Lance Corporal N.H Nalin Chinthaka of the VIR was adjudged the highest scorer in the men’s category.

Private M.T Manathunga of 6 (V) SLAWC was chosen as the best all rounder in the women’s category. Private M.N.L Damayanthi of 5 (V) SLAWC won the award for the most number of catches and the best fielder’s award. Corporal N Jayawardane of the 6 (V) SLAWC won the highest scorer’s award.

The match was judged by judges of Sri Lanka Elle Association at the invitation of the Army Elle Committee.

Major General Rasika Fernando, Chairman Sri Lanka Army Elle Committee and General Officer Commanding, 68 Division participated in the closing ceremony as the Chief Guest and read the closing declaration before certificates and prizes to the achievers were awarded.

Senior officers and Other Ranks were present in the awarding ceremony.
