SECURITY authorities in the eastern Katthankudy town during a goodwill promotion meeting held at Katthankudy Cultural Centre recently urged the public to hand over their unauthorized firearms to the nearest Police Station on or before 2nd July 2009.
The meeting, headed by Major General Srinath Rajapakse, Commander Security Forces Headquarters East (SFHQ-E) was attended by the Moulavi at Katthankudy Mosque, Special Task Force Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police, R.M.P. Ranawana, Batticaloa DIG, H.A. Gunathillake, Divisional Secretary, S.A. Musamil, 234 Brigade Colonel K.D.C.G.J. Thilakarathne, Katthankudy Mayor, OIC Katthankudy Police Station and several others.
The Katthankudy mosque Moulavi during the proceedings pointed out that possession of illegal firearms by some Muslim civilians in the area has posed a security threat to ordinary civilians and normalcy in the area. More than 200 attendees present at the meeting agreed to the views expressed by their Moulavi and pledged their support to the move.
They also expressed their continuing whole-hearted cooperation to the Security Forces and thanked the Army and the Police for removal of a few roadblocks and check points in the areas for public convenience after LTTE threats were eradicated.
Major General Rajapakse and Batticaloa DIG afterwards jointly requested the public, if any keeping illegal weapons with them to immediately deliver such firearms to the Police before 2nd July 2009, as such delivery would help the Security Forces to strictly maintain law and order.
