East Troops Join New Year Festival at ITC

The Security Force HQ - East and the Forward Maintenance Area HQ-East in collaboration with the Independent Television Network (ITN) organized the annual New Year celebration “Soorya Mangallaya” at the Infantry Training Center grounds in Minneriya on account of the dawn of the ancient Sinhala and Hindu New Year. The festival which was conducted in observing health guidelines included a range of traditional sports events. It was conducted on Tuesday (13).

Cadjan weaving, bun eating, selection of the ‘Singithi Avurudu Kumari’ and ‘Avurudu Kumara’, eye-placing on the Elephant, fancy dress parade and a number of other traditional and fun-making games dominated the day’s proceedings with the attendance of the Commander, Security Forces - East Major General Channa Weerasuriya as the Chief Guest.

The festival site was decorated and arranged depicting a traditional rural village. East-based troops gathered to the ITC grounds to take part in competitions.

At the end of the festival, Major General Channa Weerasuriya, Commander Security Forces – East, Brigadier Mahesh Abeyrathna, Commander Forward Maintenance Area – East and several senior officers gave away gifts and trophies to the winners of different events and competitions. Asics footwear | Nike
