Drill &; Band Competition draws huge enthusiasm

The final display of Drill and Band Competition and its award ceremony for the fourth consecutive year was successfully staged on Friday (28) at Army Headquarters grounds in the presence of a distinguished military and civil gathering.

The award presentation ceremony cum the grand band display was graced by the Commander of Air Force, Air Marshal Donald Perera as Chief Guest. Commander of the Army, Lt Gen Shantha Kottegoda, Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Wasantha Karannagoda, Chief of Staff of the Army, Major General Sarath Fonseka, Members of the diplomatic community and Senior Officers from the Armed Forces, the Police and members of the civil community attended the ceremony.

The Inter Regiment Drill and Band competition which saw the light of day in the year 2002 was held this year at the Sri Lanka Military Academy Parade Grounds at Diyatalawa between 22 - 24 August, this year to culminate with the final display.

Nineteen Regimental Drill Squads participated in this year's Drill competition whilst two squads from the Sri Lanka Women Corps competed for honours in the women\'s category. In addition, sixteen Regimental Brass Bands competed for supremacy in the Band Competition.

As in past years, it was indeed heartening to see the keen and close rivalry between the Regimental Drill Squads during this year's competition too. This was without doubt, due to the extreme dedication and commitment shown by all squads, who prior to the competition had gone through a long and strenuous period of training with one aim in mind. And that was to show their unfailing talents and give their best in the competition.

The Drill squads of the Sri Lanka National Guard, Regiment of Artillery, Regiment of Engineers and the Gajaba Regiment who won the first four places in finals marked their excellence at Friday's display supported by a team of Sri Lanka Army Women Corps (SLAWC). The SLAWC who were also the winners of the female event afterwards jointly staged a colourful display with the Drill Instructors during the final spectacle.

The distribution of certificate and awards commenced with the award of colours to the winners of the Inter Regiment Band Competition. The Gajaba Regiment carried away the Championship to be followed by runners-up, Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment and the Regiment of Artillery respectively.

The Championship in the Drill competition was carried away by the Sri Lanka National Guard but the women's category was snatched by second drill squad of the Sri Lanka Army Women\'s Corps. Artillery Regiment and Engineers Regiment grabbed respective second and third places.

The pennant for the Best Drill Squad of the Inter Regiment Drill Competition for the year 2005 was awarded to the Sri Lanka National Guard. Brigadier V.K.B. Weerakoon, Colonel of the Regiment Sri Lanka National Guard on behalf of his soldiers of the Regiment received the pennant from the Chief Guest.

Army Commander Lt Gen Shantha Kottegoda, Navy Commander Vice Admiral Wasantha Karannagoda, Chief of Staff of the Army, Major General Sarath Fonseka, also joined in the award of trophies and certificates to the winning teams.
