A dilapidated wing of the Brtish-made Army Headquarters complex at Colombo, renovated by Engineer Service Regiment (ESR) within a short span of two months, was officially handed over to the Directorate of Movement (D Move) at a brief function held this afternoon (23 June 2004).
This wing of the main Army Headquarters (AHQ) building remained abandoned for years with its cracked slabs and walls when renovation challenge was taken over by the ESR.
Repairs to the new wing got up steam, following an initiative taken by Maj Gen H B Thibbotumunuwe, Quarter Master General under the supervision of Brigadier S.A..G Sooriyaarachchi, Director, Engineer Services. This was one of the biggest constructions carried out by the ESR within the Army Headquarters premises. Repairs cost the Army about Rs 1.5 million.Chief of Defesnce Staff and Commander of the Army Lt. Gen L. P Balagalle ceremonially graced the occasion, attended by a wide gathering of Principal Staff Officers and Heads of all Directorates in the Army Headquarters.
