Deputy Defence Minister, Major General Aruna Jayasekara (Retd), made an observation tour to the flood affected areas along with Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage RWP RSP ndu, Commander of the Army, to observe the prevailing adverse weather condition in Mannar on 27 November 2024.
As part of the visit, a high-level conference was convened at the District Secretariat to review the flood relief measures. The meeting, chaired by the Deputy Defence Minister, Major General Aruna Jayasekara (Retd), was attended by senior officials, including the Commander of the Navy, Commander, Security Forces (Wanni), General Officer Commanding of 54 Infantry Division, Senior Deputy Inspector General of Jaffna, Commander, Naval Command - North Central and Government officials.
The conference focused on critical operational directives, such as the deployment of Army personnel for evacuation operations and ensuring the security of properties belonging to displaced civilians. Following the conference, the Army Chief conducted inspections of Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Centres established for flood-affected civilians. The inspection included visits to facilities at Saint Mother Theresa School, Shiva Nagar Kovil, and Thalvupadu Church.
During the visit, the Commander of the Army assessed the conditions at the IDP centres and engaged with local officials to ensure that adequate resources and assistance were being provided to those in need.
