Defence Secy Discusses Issues At Muhamalai

The meet at Muhamalai between Defence Secretary Austin Fernando and LTTE during the weekend (16th November 2002) was basically centred on the question of resettling civilians in northern High Security Zones and a number of related matters including the re-opening of the Nagarkovil-Point Pedro highway that runs across Vadamarachchi.

This discussion held in the stretch between Jaffna and Muhamalai (no man's land) area was attended by Security Forces Commander Jaffna Major General G. S. C Fonseka RWP RSP rcds psc, Deputy Commander (Jaffna) Major General D. Rathnasabhapathy RWP RSP USP Major General S. H. S Kottegoda, Rear Admiral Sarath Weerasekera, Northern Commander, Sri Lanka Navy, Head, Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission Trond Furhovde, LTTE representatives and several others.

A special observation committee was also appointed to evaluate these issues and compile a report.
