De-mining Accelerated

IN THE aftermath of the war that eliminated LTTE terrorism entirely from the Wanni, Sri Lankan Army troops are now busy clearing mine fields to ensure the land is free of them before resettlement.

In addition to foreign de-mining groups operating in those areas, Engineer troops of the Sri Lanka Army are actively involved in removing anti personnel mines, booby traps, claymore mines and other Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) laid earlier by the LTTE, endangering lives of civilians in their own homesteads.

Engineer troops working hand in hand with foreign de-miners have so far cleared important areas earmarked by the civil authorities for early resettlement.

Area around Adampan school in Mannar and railway track from Thandikulam to Omanthai have already been declared free from mines by the Army while de-mining in the area around Madhu Church, Mannar-Poonaryn A 32 road and Mannar Rice Bowl area is still in progress.
