THE closing ceremony of the annual Inter Regiment Sports Meet of the Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force (SLAVF) which has a proud history of over 147 years took place at the Sugathadasa Stadium on Thursday (30).
In this three-day long Sports Meet which started on 28th July, over 1000 male and female soldiers including a number of competitors with national and international records took part. They participated in representing 104 volunteer battalions. The chief guest for the closing ceremony was Major General JJPST Liyanage, the Commandant of Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force (SLAVF).
Ten new records were established in men’s shot putt, javelin throw , high jump, pole vault, discus throw medly relay and men’s 4x100 m events, women’s long jump, shot putt, hammer throwing and women’s 1500m events.
The Championship for men’s events was won by the Artillery Regiment while the runner-up was Sri Lanka Light Infantry Regiment. The women’s Championship was won by the 2nd battalion of Women’s Corps and the Runner up was 4th Battalion of Women’s Corps. The best male athlete trophy went to Lance Bombardier M.P.G Harischandra Bandara and the Best Female Athlete went to Staff Sergeant P.D.M.G. Wickramasinghe.
The closing ceremony was attended by Major General Amitha Obesekara, the Deputy Commandant of SLVF, a large number of Senior Officers, former Commandants and Deputy Commandants and a large crowd.
