CRICKET TOURNAMENT IN JAFFNA DRAWS LARGE CROWDS

A combined Police and Army cricket tournament got underway at Jaffna Central College grounds recently with the participation of all Jaffna-based Police divisions and Army Brigades/Units.

The tournament, organized by 514 Brigade under the aegis of 51 Division in Jaffna, was competed by sixteen skilful teams of both Army and Police. Hundreds of civilians, who visited the ground en masse showing an enormous interest and enthusiasm in the game, joined hands with members of the armed forces and the Police to make the event a big success. Stiff resistance and spirited team work finally qualified combined 9th & 14th Sinha Regiment team and the Sri Lanka National Guards team to vie with each other for final supremacy.

One of the highlights of the occasion, included the donation of a much-needed matting, generally used for light cricket games to the Jaffna Central College. The donation worth over Rs.100,000 was made through the Jaffna Divisional Secretary. Amidst rhythmical beats of the military bands that added colour and entertainment to the occasion, the final tussle ended joyously under the auspices of Major General M. D. S Chandrapala RWP RSP USP ndu psc Commander Security Forces Headquarters, Jaffna who graced the occasion as Chief Guest.

Many representatives of Non-Governmental Organizations, Senior Officers of the Police, Army and Navy and a large gathering of civilians witnessed this mammoth and interesting event.
