Cream of Engineers in IESL Honours Commander Inviting Him as Chief Guest in 'Engineering Excellence Awards' at BMICH

The country's most prestigious apex body for professional Engineers in Sri Lanka, the Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka (IESL) Wednesday (27) evening honoured Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake, Commander of the Army by inviting him to be the Chief Guest at the annual 'Engineering Excellence Awards-2018' ceremony at the BMICH where those excelled in the science and the practice of engineering in Sri Lanka were rewarded before a galaxy of veterans, distinguished guests and top-level engineering professionals.

Eng. (Prof) T.M Pallewatta, President IESL, together with Honorary Secretary and Council Members extended a warm welcome to the day's Chief Guest on arrival with a sheaf of betel and conducted him to the hall in a procession before the traditional oil lamp-lighting took place. After a brief welcome note, the Commander of the Army was invited on stage to give away those 'Engineering Excellence Awards' to the laureates, including a few appreciative awards to outstanding veterans in the trade.

The event which celebrates and rewards excellence in the science and the practice of engineering in Sri Lanka honours distinguished engineers under several categories, namely the 'Eminence in Engineering Awards', 'Excellence in Engineering Awards', 'Special Appreciation Awards', 'Chartered Engineer Awards', 'Excellence in Engineering Journalism Awards','Engineering Entrepreneur Award' etc in addition to the presentation of the most recognized President's Award.

In his brief talk to the occasion, the Commander of the Army spoke high of the contribution being made by engineers in the IESL and their professionalism, widely visible in many a sphere as the country is marching towards prosperity and speedy development. He paid a special tribute to the memory of great engineers who made both the trade and the country proud and attracted plaudits from overseas counterparts.

Towards the culmination of the proceedings, Eng Prof Pallewatta showed the IESL gratitude by presenting the day's Chief Guest with a special memento. Lieutenant General Senanayake did not forget to leave his compliments in the IESL Visitors' Book before he left the BMICH.

The Engineering Association of Ceylon was founded in 1906 before it was renamed as the IESL. The IESL is affiliated and a member of the International Professional Engineers Agreement.
