CRD Research Skills Produce 'Blue Guns' for Weapon Training

The Centre for Research and Development of the Ministry of Defence recently completed another successful research project for Tri Forces of Sri Lanka introducing a low -cost production technique for fabricating Blue Guns (Artificial guns).

The research project which saw the light as the first successful outcome of the year at the CRD was carried out under the guidance of CRD`s Director General Major General Renuka Rowel (Retd). The first set of prototypes of Browning HP pistol and an HK gun was officially handed over to the Sri Lanka Army Special Forces on 10 July 2020 during a simple ceremony at the CRD.

Blue guns are non-functional inert detailed replicas of actual weapons with the same weight designed for Military Training purposes. These gun replicas are used by professional military units in the world for weapon-handling training sessions with no live firing. The purpose of using these guns is to minimize the damage caused to actual weapons (small scale high-cost guns specially designed for special missions) when they are used for drill training, endurance training by way of exposing to dust, water and dirt and damages due to dropping, mishandling etc. Blue guns are high-cost products which can only purchase from international markets.

A work shop also conducted at the CRD to introduce and transmit the new low-cost production technology; fibre molding to Tri Forces. Technical representatives of the Tri Forces who attended the workshop received hands-on training on fabricating of blue guns using the new method and a team of Special Forces soldiers received one-week comprehensive in-house training on production of these guns for Special Forces training. The project was carried out at the CRD under the supervision of Major N.A.B.M.S Nishshanka Chief Coordinator - Ballistics, Armament, Ammunition and Explosive Wing of the CRD.
