Container-Installed First Firing Unit Delivered to Commando Regiment

Sri Lanka Army’s Commando Regiment (CR) at Ganemulla on Friday (24) formally received the country’s first container-based mobile live firing range unit, an innovative invention, exclusively produced by the Centre for Research and Development (CRD) of the Ministry of Defence (MoD).

Director General of the CRD, Major General (Retd) Renuka Rowel on behalf of the Ministry of Defence, acting Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army during a simple ceremony, held at the CR Regimental Centre in Ganemulla handed over the unit, a well-researched product, innovated by Major Bandula Nishshanka who is also the designer of the Digital Close Quarter Combat Theatre (MILO Range), now functional at the CR HQ at Ganemulla.

Indexed as Ce-FRAD-2019, the pistol rated mobile live firing range is installed inside a 40 ft long shipping container and fully ballistic, protected with newly-developed ballistic rubber, that too has been manufactured and newly-developed by the same researcher.

CRD successfully managed to develop the first low-cost prototype for Rs 4.6 million, with all facilities, available in such units produced overseas. Ce-FRAD 2019 is considered as a significant outcome for the Sri Lankan military as it also built as a module to introduce the indoor live firing range concept for the Sri Lankan Military.
