Concerned Commander Donates to Save Thilina's Life

Lending the fatherly eye on a family struck by a string of tragedies with loss of three children in quick succession, the Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya in response to a personal appeal made to him, took steps to donate a sum of Rs 2 lakhs for recovery of the family’s fourth 8 year old child, confirmed afflicted with Aplastic Anaemia, the condition where bone marrow does not produce adequate new cells to replenish blood cells.

Parents, B.P Rathnayaka and Mrs R.M.N Chandrika Siriwardena of Pattiyagedara, Galmediyagoda, Diyathalawa, lost their elder daughter, Nipuni (3 ½ ), Sineth (3) and Harsha (7), all three  one after the other within a matter of 5 years, due to the same disease, but they are determined to save the life of Thilina Devidun Rathnayaka (8), their latest addition to the family who had been now recommended to undergo a total bone marrow transfusion at Chennai  Apollo Hospital, India at a cost of Rs 50 lakhs.

Medical specialists and paeditricians treating the child at Borella Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children after confirming the disease have advised the parents accordingly, but those exhausted parents after three tragedies within a short span of time are now determined to find necessary funds from donors and philanthropists.

Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya in response to the appeal, extended to him by those parents for financial support, invited the mother, R.M.N Chandrika Siriwardena to his office on Monday (18) and donated a cheque to the value of Rs 2 lakhs towards the medical cost of the child in India on behalf of all the officers and other ranks in the Army.

The mother, playing the role, quite identical to the Buddhist legendary, ‘Patachaara’ in our times, humbly accepted the ‘donation for life’ from the Commander of the Army and thanked the Army for its generosity and considerateness.
