Commander’s Guest Lecture at DSCSC Touches Sri Lanka Army’s National Security Concerns

The Defence Services Command and Staff College (DSCSC) at Sapugaskanda, the internationally-reputed academic seat of learning in Sri Lanka that trains tri service officers in command and staff techniques and develops the intellectual attributes to cope with their future appointments and challenges welcomed Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage, Commander of the Army on Thursday (01) when he arrived there to deliver the customary ‘Commander’s Lecture’ to both local and foreign DSCSC undergraduates following the Course No-16.

Major General B.K.G.M.L Rodrigo RSP psc IG, Commandant at DSCSC after a warm reception introduced the day’s lecturer to the audience at the DSCSC auditorium where 149 undergraduates including 22 foreign officers were seated awaiting the Army Chief’s arrival and his words of wisdom.

The Army Chief’s guest lecture, themed on ‘Sri Lanka Army’s Concerns on National Security’ focused largely on the evolution of ‘Sri Lanka Army’s Perception of National Security in the Last 72 Years’, ‘Present Complex Security Environment’, ‘Army’s View on Security as per Present Context’ and ‘Future Planning of Sri Lanka Army’ and presented a comprehensive overview of security developments until 1971 after independence, and during the period between 1971-1990, Post Humanitarian Operations up to date, challenges of non-traditional threats and anticipated challenges in the future.

At the end of the lecture, DSCSC undergraduates had the opportunity of interacting with the guest speaker by way of questions and clarifications during the question and answer session. At the end of the arrangement, the DSCSC Commandant on behalf of all undergraduates expressed his gratitude to Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage for his presence by awarding a memento. Commander of the Army also reciprocated by presenting a memento and a book pack to the DSCSC library. Prior to his departure, the Commander of the Army was invited to pen his thoughts and complimentary remarks in the DSCSC Visitors’ Book.

The DSCSC Course No-16 consists of 149 undergraduates, including 22 foreigners from Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Maldives, Nepal, Oman, Pakistan, Rwanda, Saudi Arabia, Senegal and Zambia. Similarly, 76 Army, 26 Navy and 25 Air Force officers are following the same course which qualifies them to receive the ‘psc’ qualification.
