Commander\'s dream comes true Library at Army Headquarters opened

An Army Library for Headquarters at Colombo, a much-needed pool of knowledge at easy disposal, became a reality on Thursday (4) when the Commander of the Army Lt. Gen S. H S Kottegoda walked into the Army Seva Vanitha Unit complex to declare it open amidst beating of auspicious drums and playing of conch-shells.

Unveiling the plaque that notifies the opening of this worthy cause, the Commander cut the yellow-coloured ribbon to walk into the library and declare it officially opened. Light means wisdom and a well-equipped library meant a pool of enhanced knowledge and improved wisdom to the Army personnel on duty at the Headquarters. The idea mooted by Lt. Gen Kottegoda when he was the Director General, General Staff then went on to light the traditional oil lamp in the company of his senior officers before joining religious rites on the occasion. Two members of the Maha Sangha recited Pirith and invoked blessings on the project, undertaken and brought to successful completion by the Directorate of Training under the guidance of Brigadier Srinath Rajapakse.

Volumes worth over Rs. two million are now stored at the library for reference. To go hand in hand with global trends, the library has been accessed with Internet facilities. The location was allotted for this particular purpose thanks to the understanding of the Army Seva Vanitha Unit (ASVU) presided by Mrs Sonia Kottegoda. A large number of ASVU office bearers and Senior Officers attended the ceremony.
