Commander Undertakes 'Avurudu Negam' Trip to Dependent War Heroes

Reminiscing about age-old practices during the times of Sinhala and Tamil New Year, the ‘Negam Yama’ (visit to relatives) tradition was revived on Friday (24) morning by Lieutenant General Crishanthe De Silva, Commander of the Army when he arrived at the Attidiya Mihindu Seth Medura, together with Mrs Nayana De Silva, President, Army Seva Vanitha Unit and senior officers where a two-digit number of dependent Army War Heroes are receiving rehabilitation, rest and recuperation, having sustained permanent injuries in the war for peace.

Lieutenant General De Silva during his close interaction with those dependent War Heroes at this wellness resort, exchanged views with some of them and closely inquired into their needs and other requirements, if any as the Commander distributing gift parcels, moved from one bed to the other in all three wards, accompanied by Mrs Nayana De Silva, Major General Sanjeewa Munasinghe, Director General, Army Health Services, Major General A.S de Z Wickramaratne, Director General Rehabilitation, Major General Ubhaya Medawala, Commander, Security Force Headquarters - West and a few more senior officers.

Two wheelchair-borne inmates offering sheaves of betel warmly welcomed the visiting Army Chief and the delegation after Mihindu Seth Medura Commandant received them at the entrance to the premises.

Lieutenant General De Silva during his stay raised a few inquiries, pertaining to its administration and facilities and instructed Mihindu Seth Medura authorities to attend to them for the greater benefit of the inmates.

Lieutenant General De Silva also took time off to admire a segment of artifacts, creative handicrafts and ornaments, produced by the inmates themselves as part of his agenda at this wellness resort. Similarly, the Commander did not forget to speak to the civil staff, serving the Wellness Resort with the motive of inquiring into their concerns and appreciating their commitment.

His near one and half hour-long interaction inside, culminated with sharing of refreshments with inmates who are mobile and signing of the visitors’ book at this office as a symbol of memory of his visit to the place.

During festive seasons, it is customary for the office of the Commander to attach special prominence to the welfare needs of disable War Heroes, most of who are housed at island-wide Army-managed wellness resorts, such as ‘Abimansala 1, 2 & 3’, Ragama Ranaviru Sevana and the Attidiya Mihindu Seth Medura where hundreds of worst-affected War Heroes, continue to receive treatment or recuperative rehabilitation for the remainder of their lives.
