Commander Switches on X'mas Illuminations & Distributes Welfare Incentives to Army Children

Prior to the customary X'mas service at the Army HQ got underway, Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva, Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army along with his spouse, Mrs Sujeewa Nelson, President Army Seva Vanitha Unit Tuesday (23) evening arrived at the Central Environment Authority junction turn, switched on Christmas illuminations and unveiled decorations along the road passage to the Army HQ which has been developed and beautified by the Army under the 'Thuru Mithuru Nawa Ratak' project of the Commander of the Army.

The event's Chief Guest, Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva at the invitation of the Major General Wasantha Madola, Commander, Logistics Command Headquarters, together with his spouse, Chief of Staff and a few Senior Officers as dusk fell switched on the illuminations along the road that leads to the Army HQ and the Army HQ complex as part of the festive beautification, a spectacle that cannot be seen elsewhere in Colombo due to COVID-19 transmission threat.

A few minutes later, both the Commander of the Army and his spouse joined distribution of gift parcels and incentives to a representative group of children of Army families after inviting them to the Army HQ as one more welfare feature, highlighted in the just released 'Army Way Forward Strategy -2020-2025. Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva and Mrs Sujeewa Nelson distributed those incentives, together with the colourfully-dressed Santa Clause, an eye-catching customary feature during the Christmas season.

However, the Army Christian Fellowship this year scaled down arrangements in view of existing health guidelines.
