Commander Spells Out His New Year Vision to AHQ Officers

Setting out his vision for the New Year - 2014 and reviewing what had been achieved in the year just ended, the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake on Thursday (2) morning, addressed a cross-section of officers at Army Headquarters as a routine practice at the beginning of each new year.

Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake in his lengthy address, touched on several aspects, relevant to the smooth conduct of administrative and logistic functions in the Army and told that the Army Headquarters, should work as the brains behind management of the entire organization.

Spelling out significance of close cooperation with every branch and each Directorate, the Commander said the productivity and efficiency as key factors that run the human machine, need such close understanding with one another when a colossal organization, like the Army, marches forward into the new century.

“Efforts must be made to attract efficient and talented officers to the Army Headquarters, thereby enhancing productivity in the organization. In short, the Army Headquarters must generate new innovative programmes and accelerate projects that have been undertaken by the Army for the greater benefit of the country by adding new inputs,” he said.

Referring to further promotion of welfare roles among all ranks, he underlined the need for cohesive and comprehensive approaches to the gamut of welfare projects, now underway in the organization.

“Their priorities should be identified and acted upon with an open mind in order to provide relief or redress to their grievances, if any. No pre-conceived notions would serve the soldier who approaches you for resolution unless you read his mindset in adequate proportion and correct manner,” the Commander commented.

The Commander in addition, highlighted the need for re-introduction of former recruitment procedures to the Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force. “Like in the past, only skilled professionals with expertise and exceptional abilities should be enlisted to the Volunteer Force, through which the Army can make use of their resources to the best interests of the organization since our priorities and national goals keep on changing often as the country is faced with multiple development projects where our members are also actively involved,” the Commander pointed out.

The Commander noted that all Army members should at all times pay strict attention to their uniforms and more particularly of the uniformity in all dresses with equal focus because it reflects your professional dignity and high sense of discipline.

He also urged all officers to work under relaxed and pleasing milieu with mental harmony, away from stress and fatigue because in the post-war scenario, none are expected to rush things like before in an unwanted manner and cause tension among workmates.

“Therefore all Directorates must feel free to organize their own entertaining features such as picnics, get-togethers, etc since they enormously, help refresh one’s mind and motivate you,” the Commander opined.

Considering ongoing post-war Army re-structuring programme, the Commander emphasized the need to promote sports among all ranks in the Army since potential for both local and international achievements, loom large among our members. Plans are already afoot to provide more infrastructure facilities and opportunities for Army personnel, engaged in sports activities, the Commander reminded.
