Major General J.P.C. Peiris RWP RSP ndc, Commander Security Forces (Wanni), graced the "Security Forces Headquarters (Wanni) Commander’s Challenge Trophy - 2024" cricket encounter as the Chief Guest on 07 September 2024 at the Municipal Council Ground, Mannar together with the heads of the institutions of government and private sector in the area.
The event was held following the conceptual layout of Major General R. P .A .R. P Rajapaksha RSP, the General Officer Commanding, 54 Infantry Division to sustain a togetherness in between Mannar communities.
To coincide the Cricket encounter, prize giving was also organized to award the certificates to the winners of band competition which was held among the schools of Mannar district.
Subsequently, a donation of sixty gift packs took place for selected school children consist with school bags, shoes, stationaries while sixty dry ration packs distributed for the selected families of the area.
Mr. Clive of Bata Pvt Limited, and Mr Prasad Lokubalasooriya extended their generosity for the welfare project while Major Birty Perera (Retd) extended financial assistance for dry rations.
Marking the significance of the event most reverend Dr. Fidelis Lionel Emmanuel Fernando, the Bishop of Mannar and religious leaders of the area participated in the event as guests of honour.
The Mannar Falcons emerged as the champions of the cricket encounter while Mannar St. Servatius Boys School emerged as the champions of the band competition.
The Commander Security Forces (Wanni) awarded the prizes and certificates to the winners of the band competition.
The District Secretary of Mannar, Mr. K. Kanakeshwaran, Commander of North Central Naval Command, Rear Admiral Jagath Kumara SSP Mannar, Mr. Varuna Chandrapala, and a large number of military personnel and civilians participated in the event.
The event concluded with a lunch organized by the 54 Infantry Division, serving to 600 civilians and school children.
Further, the Commander Security Forces (Wanni), and General Officer Commanding of the 54 Infantry Division inaugurated the newly constructed RO (Reverse Osmosis) plant to provide purified water for the people of Selvari area. Troops of 11 SLA undertook the project with the financial assistance of the Shrddha TV in the 543 Infantry Brigade area.
